LXE Hearing, the parent company of Eargo and Lexie Hearing, has announced it’s winding down its U.S. operations, raising questions about the future of customer support, warranties, and mobile apps for people who rely on the company’s over-the-counter (OTC) hearing aids.

The announcement comes just over a year after Eargo and hearX (the company behind Lexie Hearing) merged to form LXE Hearing with $100 million in new funding and ambitions to become a leader in the OTC hearing aid market.

Existing hearing aids will continue providing hearing amplification and core functionality, but the long-term future of customer support, warranties, mobile apps, and other services remains uncertain.

The 3 key takeaways

  • Eargo and Lexie hearing aids will continue working, and customer support is available through at least September 15, 2026.
  • Current customers should act now by downloading and keeping the companion app, submitting warranty claims, and saving proof of purchase.
  • The long-term future of customer support, warranties, mobile apps, and replacement parts remains uncertain as LXE Hearing develops its transition plans.

Why is LXE Hearing shutting down?

In a statement to customers, LXE Hearing said it had explored restructuring options and strategic transactions but was ultimately “unable to identify a viable path forward,” leading to the decision to wind down its U.S. business.

The company did not announce a buyer or successor to continue operating the Eargo or Lexie brands. However, they say they “are evaluating available options regarding future customer support, application functionality, and warranty administration” and will provide more information in the coming months.

What does this mean if you own Eargo or Lexie hearing aids?

The good news is that your hearing aids won’t suddenly stop working.

According to LXE Hearing:

  • Existing Eargo and Lexie devices will continue providing hearing amplification and core functionality.
  • The Eargo and Lexie mobile apps remain operational for now.
  • Customer support will continue through at least September 15, 2026.
  • Warranty claims submitted by September 15, 2026, will continue to be processed.

Customers should keep their email address up to date to receive future announcements. This can be done through the app or by contacting customer support.

Unanswered questions

Beyond September 15, 2026, several important questions remain unanswered as LXE Hearing develops a longer-term plan for its mobile apps, customer support, and warranty administration. As of right now, support services are not guaranteed beyond this date.
Questions that remain include:

  • How long the Eargo and Lexie apps will remain available.
  • Whether future software updates will be provided.
  • How warranties will be administered after September 15, 2026.
  • What customer support will look like after the transition period.
  • The long-term availability of replacement parts, such as domes, wax guards, and tips.

The company says it will provide additional updates via email before any changes occur.

What should current Eargo and Lexie customers do now?

If you already own Eargo or Lexie hearing aids, there’s no need to panic. Your devices and companion apps continue to work, and customer support remains available through at least September 15, 2026. However, there are a few steps you should take before then to prepare for the company’s transition:

While many details about the company’s long-term transition remain unknown, taking these steps now can help ensure you’re prepared for any future changes.

What does this mean for the OTC hearing aid market?

LXE’s closure is significant because Eargo and Lexie were two of the most recognizable names in the OTC hearing aid market.

However, the company’s closure does not necessarily mean the OTC hearing aid model has failed.

Instead, it highlights the challenges of building a sustainable hearing healthcare business. Unlike many consumer electronics, hearing aids often require ongoing support, software maintenance, customer education, warranty service, and technical assistance throughout the life of the device.

At the same time, the OTC category continues to evolve. Established hearing aid manufacturers, newer consumer technology companies, and companies such as Apple (which introduced hearing health features for AirPods Pro 2 and AirPods Pro 3) are expanding hearing-related features and bringing new competition into the market.

Bottom line

The closure of LXE Hearing is disappointing news for both Eargo and Lexie customers, but it does not mean existing hearing aids will suddenly stop working.

For now, customers should continue using their devices, keep the companion app installed, submit any necessary warranty claims, take advantage of customer support while it remains available, and watch for future updates from LXE Hearing.

The company’s closure is a reminder that hearing aids are more than a one-time purchase. Many devices rely on smartphone apps, replacement parts, warranty coverage, and ongoing customer support through their lifespan. When choosing a hearing aid, it’s worth consulting with a local audiologist and considering not only price and features, but also what kind of long-term support a company offers and how you’ll access help if you need it.
